It’s the last day of January and we’ve had a mini – warm spell here the past couple of days. Mostly sunny and 40 degrees! A couple of days earlier this week, it was snowing, blowing and left us with 4 new inches of the white stuff. Now it’s melting and sliding off the building roofs, which interferes with our TV satellite, so is good incentive to get off the couch and get outside.

With a hint of Spring in the air,  we certainly didn’t want to waste a beautiful winter day indoors, so Holly and I strapped on our snow shoes, packed a lunch and headed into the woods with the dog. Our Alaskan Malamute, Sitka, happily carried our lunch and beverages along with her own doggie treats.

Snow was a bit sticky with the warm day and a good “moment of truth” for one’s level of fitness (or lack thereof).  Because of this, we didn’t venture quite as far as we originally intended, so we stopped to build a campfire, roast a couple bratwurst and have a cup of cocoa. A gray jay found us and flew from branch to branch, on the watch for a piece of hotdog bun. Of course I placed part of my bun on a branch for the little begger, who quickly snatched it and flew away to a safe perch.

All in all, we have had a pretty mild winter up here in the Northland this year.  Spring is definitely around the corner though, and with that, comes thoughts of planning summer vacations! Hopefully you can make time to ‘unplug’ from our electronic world, enjoy a trek in the crisp winter air and take in the sights and sounds of nature wherever you may be. We hope to see you up in our neck of the woods sometime soon!
